Massachusetts Hockey Welcomes Dans Locmelis For 2023-24

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added 6-0, 170-pound left-shot center Dans Locmelis to its incoming class for 2023-24, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Tuesday. Locmelis, a native of Jelgava, Latvia, was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, 119th overall, and joins forward Aydar Suniev as the second member of the Minutemen's freshman class for next season.
 
"Dans had an outstanding season playing for Lulea in the Swedish Junior League, leading his team in scoring," said Carvel. "Dans is a Latvian who has represented his country on the national stage many times and played in the World Junior Championships last winter. A Fourth Round Draft pick of the Boston Bruins, Dans is a complete, 200-foot player that has notable skill level that is matched by an impressive work ethic. We expect him to play in the middle where his hockey sense and skating abilities will be best utilized."
 
Locmelis has spent the last four seasons with Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League. He put up 59 points for Lulea's Under-20 team in 2022-23 with 25 goals and 34 assists and was +28 over 44 regular season games, adding seven more points (4g, 3a) in six postseason contests. In 2021-22 Locmelis logged 34 points (18g, 16a) over 44 games with the club and a goal and an assist over five playoff games.
 
The center represented his native Latvia at both the 2022 and 2023 World Junior Championships, registering four goals and an assist for five points over 11 games over the two tournaments. He was honored as one of Latvia's Top 3 players of the tournament in 2023.
