Ellis Merriweather Signs With The New Orleans Saints

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints announced the signing of running back Ellis Merriweather on Monday (May 15) following his performance at Rookie Camp.

Last season for the Minutemen, Merriweather played in ten games, carrying the ball 150 times for 575 yards as the team's leading rusher and was named to Phil Steele's 2022 All-Independent Team as a second-team running back. He had had a season-high 122 rushing yards to go along with a pair of touchdowns at Arkansas State. He closed out the season with 49 rushing yards on five carries and a 27-yard reception against Army before being forced out of the game with an injury.

In 2021, Merriweather carried 218 times for 1,138 yards with five touchdowns, to garner Phil Steele second-team All-Independent for the first time, as he was the first 1,000-yard rusher in the FBS era in program history.

The Alpharetta, Ga. native transferred to UMass in 2020 from Garden City (Kan.) Community College. He finished his Massachusetts career with 10 career 100-yard rushing games and three career two-touchdown games.
