Van Herwijnen, Hughes, Hack Selected As UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

The student-athletes will be honored at the sports luncheon on Wednesday.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts student-athletes Myrte van Herwijnen of field hockey, Alec Hughes of men's soccer, and Danielle Hack of tennis were selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union on Tuesday. The trio will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at the Berkshire Dining Commons.
Sophomore goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen led the way for the Minutewomen in a 2-1 penalty shootout victory over Yale, recording a career-high 18 total saves. The Huizen, The Netherlands native was a stalwart in net, stopping all four Yale shootout attempts, boosting the Minutewomen to the home victory. Van Herwijnen had a career weekend recording 27 saves over two games while doubling her previous single-game season high (9) in Sunday's victory.
Alec Hughes led the Minutemen offense to a draw against #14 Vermont and a conference win over George Washington. Against #14 Vermont Hughes scored the lone UMass goal while recording two shots, both on target, in 65 minutes of play. Hughes then recorded his 29th career goal in a 3-0 win versus George Washington. His 29 goals are good for 8th all-time in career goals at UMass. Hughes finished the game with seven shots, 3 on target, while playing 80 minutes.
UMass tennis kicked off its fall tennis season at the Dartmouth Invitational, as Danielle Hack led the Minutewomen in singles with a perfect 3-0 record. In singles play, she defeated her Saint John's opponent, 6-1, 6-1, before taking down the No. 62 nationally ranked, and No. 2 regionally ranked, Marine Aguiar of Boston College, 6-1, 6-1. On the final day of competition, she beat her Dartmouth foe, 6-3, 6-0. Hack also went 2-1 in doubles play, earning a 7-5 victory over Saint John's with partner Thamonpan Jonglertrakul, while picking up a 6-3 win with Ella Faessler over Dartmouth.
Van Herwijnen and the field hockey team are back in action this Friday as they host #13 Saint Joseph's. Men's soccer is on the road this week for a pair of conference matchups starting with St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon. UMass tennis travels to Harvard on Friday as they compete in the Regionals tournament.
