UMass Defeated On The Road At VCU, 83-55

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to VCU on Tuesday evening in the Siegel Center, 83-55. The Minutemen (11-7 Overall, 2-4 Atlantic 10) led the first nine minutes and change before the Rams (14-5 Overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10) used a scoring run to end the first half that saw the home team take control.
Matt Cross posted team-high numbers in points with 15 and rebounds with 10 on his way to recording his third double-double of the season.
UMass took the lead from the opening possession and held until the 10:55 mark. Dyondre Dominguez started the game a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and knocked down his second triple of the night after VCU took a two-point lead to put UMass back on top 20-19. The Minutemen held a 29-25 advantage with 6:58 left in the first before an eventual 9-0 VCU scoring run brought the score to 40-33 at the break in favor of the home team.
The Minutemen shot 39-percent from the field in the first half while the Rams converted on 52-percent of their shots from the field and 67-percent from 3-point range.
VCU's run continued into the second half as the lead expanded to double figures with 15:21 to go. UMass started the second half just 1-of-8 from the field before a Wildens Leveque slam from Cross as part of his team-high five assists. The Rams followed with another scoring run, this one a 9-0 run to pull ahead 55-39. VCU opened the second half 8-of-13 for 62-percent from the field as it pushed its lead to 20 at 61-41 with 10:48 to go.
UMass was held to 19-percent from the field in the second half and finished the game at 29-percent while VCU improved its field goal percentage in the final 20 minutes to shoot 53-percent on the night. The Minutemen hauled in 19 offensive rebounds but finished with nine second chance points. Brandon Martin grabbed five rebounds while Gianni Thompson finished with four.
Rahsool Diggins tied his career-high in scoring with seven and added four assists for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen conclude their two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. tip-off in Philadelphia, Pa. against Saint Joseph's.
