Massachusetts Football Shutdowns Stony Brook For 20-3 Win

September 17, 2022 | Football

Jordan Mahoney had a 94-yard interception return for a touchdown.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts football team used a suffocating defensive effort to post a 20-3 victory over Stony Brook for its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at McGuirk Alumni Stadium (10, 011).

Jordan Mahoney and Josh Wallace each had an interception for UMass, with Mahoney returning his for a 94-yard touchdown. The Minutemen also limited the Seawolves to a 2-for-14 mark on third down.

Gino Campiotti finished 10-for-15 for 90 yards and a touchdown while adding 72 yards on the ground. Ellis Merriweather totaled a team-high 76 yards rushing.

How It Happened

The Minutemen took the opening kickoff and drove down the field for 10-play, 70-yard drive, capped with a touchdown reception by Cameron Sullivan-Brown. Merriweather also had a key play, keeping the drive alive with a 10-yard run on a fourth-and-one from the UMass 39.

Massachusetts extended the lead when Mahoney picked off a Daron Bryden pass for his first career interception and returned it 94 yards for the score, marking the first interception return for a touchdown since current Indianapolis Colt Isaiah Rodgers did so on Sept. 28, 2019 against Akron.

The teams traded field goals to close out the half with the Minutemen in front 17-3, with Wallace also picking off a Bryden pass for his second career interception.

With 5:07 left in the third, Stony Brook took advantage of a deflection and intercepted Campiotti on a deep shot the resulted in the Sea Wolves starting their second drive of the half at their own seven yard line. But the UMass defense responded by forcing Stony Brook into a three and out.

The Minutemen tacked on a 38-yard Cameron Carson field goal at the end of the third quarter for what proved to be the final margin.

Quotes
Thoughts on holding Stony Brook to three points...

"Hadn't done it since 2008. Ain't that funny. I bet they'll say anything about the 55 points I gave up last week though. Got to laugh to keep from crying sometimes."

Thoughts on playing at home as head coach again …
"It didn't hit me. I'm so immersed on trying to fix this thing….and that's really occupied all my time."

Next Up
The Minutemen are back on the road next week, playing a 2 p.m. ET game against Temple at Lincoln Financial Field (ESPN+).
