Minutewomen Pick Up Shutout Win Over UAlbany In Regular Season Opener

Ella Curry put home a penalty kick in the 34th-minute while Megan Olszewski finished with seven saves on the day.
AMHERST, Mass. – Ella Curry put home a penalty kick in the 34th-minute as the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout win over UAlbany on Thursday at Rudd Field. Megan Olszewski collected seven saves in goal for the Minutewomen on 16 Great Dane shots.
Chandler Pedolzky drew the penalty with just under 12 minutes to go in the first half as she got around her defender and drew a foul eight yards from goal. Curry stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it home in the right side of goal to give UMass a 1-0 advantage. Pedolzky and Curry each finished with two shots while Curry put both of her shots on frame.
Olszewski came up with six of her seven saves in the first 45 minutes, with all six coming in the first 18 minutes of play.
The Minutewomen finished with 14 shots on the afternoon with eight on target while the Great Danes attempted 16 shots with seven on target. Ashley Lamond put two of her three shots on target while Grace Pinkus added three shots. Pinkus nearly put the Minutewomen up two goals in the 36th-minute as her shot went off the crossbar before consecutive shots by Lauren Bonavita and Bella Recinos kept the pressure on.
UMass continues non-conference play on Sunday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Fairfield for the first of three consecutive games on the road.
