AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added Owen Murray, a 5-10, 181-pound right-shot defenseman to its incoming freshman class for 2022-23, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Tuesday. Murray, a native of Decker, Manitoba, joins forwards Tyson Dyck, Michael Cameron and Kenny Connors and defensemen Mikey Adamson and Noah Ellis as the sixth member of the Minutemen's Class of 2026.
"Owen comes to UMass after two seasons with Green Bay in the USHL," said Carvel. "A skilled offensive defenseman that plays with passion, Owen has great mobility and speed and therefore is often involved in the game up ice. Owen anticipates the game at a high level and has a high ceiling as a player. He is another mobile offensive-minded defenseman to add to our group."
In two years with the Green Bay Gamblers, Murray saw action in 99 games and totaled 38 points on nine goals and 29 assists. This past season he wore an "A" for the Gamblers and contributed six goals and 16 assists for 22 points.
Prior to his time in Green Bay, Murray played two seasons (2018-20) with the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) where he registered 75 points (16g, 59a) over 103 contests. In 2018-19 he was tabbed the MJHL Rookie of the Year and named to the MJHL All-Rookie Team after helping Portage to the MJHL title and an Anavet Cup with seven points (2g, 5a) in 15 postseason games and 41 points (9g, 32a) over 55 regular season contests. In 2019-20 Murray played for Canada West in the World Junior A Challenge.
