June 22, 2022 | Athletics Department

A total of 3,556 honorees across the conference earned league recognition.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Wednesday that a remarkable 3,556 student-athletes received Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction for 2021-22. This is the third-highest mark in league history and is the third year in a row the total number of honorees has topped 3,500. The University of Massachusetts placed 230 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

There were 281 student-athletes that achieved a 4.0 GPA in 2021-22, representing eight percent of the total number of honorees and nearly two-thirds (an impressive 64.7 percent) of the honorees, equaling 2,299 student-athletes, recorded a 3.5 GPA or better. Additionally, the average number of honorees per school was 254.

On the eve of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, it's notable that 65 percent of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honorees are female student-athletes. Title IX greatly expanded the opportunities for women in higher education, including participation in collegiate sports and access to fields of study, which is reflected in nearly two-thirds of the honorees being women.

"I commend our student-athletes once again for their dedicated work in the classroom," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "It's quite impressive that through the transition of our member institutions to a more traditional learning environment, (post COVID) over 3,500 of our student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA, and 2,299 of those had a 3.5 GPA or better. That's a testament that academics are a priority for our student-athletes and our member institutions."

Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a combined fall and spring semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year to be selected for the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Both freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award. In each of the last five years, the league honored over 3,000 student-athletes per year. Over the course of the last three years, A-10 student-athletes set honor roll records with over 3,500 honorees each year while navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic and its effect on academics as well as managing societal and mental health challenges during that time frame.

The top three women's sports were women's cross country/track & field with 447 honorees, women's soccer (351 honorees) and rowing (316 honorees). The top three men's sports were men's cross county/track & field (341 honorees), baseball (281 honorees) and men's soccer (259 honorees).
