Trio Named UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

Faessler and Tye of tennis, and Morris of women’s lacrosse earn the weekly accolade.

AMHERST, Mass. – Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye of tennis, and Kassidy Morris of women's lacrosse were all named UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union, announced on Tuesday. The trio will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this week.

The luncheon takes place on Wednesday, March 25, at noon in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons. Cost to attend is $17 (15.30 for UMass Alumni).

UMass picked up two wins on the week, edging out Miami (OH), 4-3, on Friday and winning 4-3 over Ball State on Sunday. Ella Faessler went 2-0 in singles competition. Faessler won two straight sets against Oliveira of Miami (OH) at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-2, on Friday. She then defeated Bristow of Ball State in two consecutive sets, 6-2, 7-6(3) at court No. 1 on Sunday. 

In doubles play, Faessler went 1-1 with partner Renata Farima. The pair defeated both Miami (OH) at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. The pair fell to their Ball State opponents, 6-4, at No. 1.

UMass picked up two wins on the week, edging out Miami (OH), 4-3, on Friday and winning 4-3 over Ball State on Sunday. Amelia Tye went 2-0 in singles play, downing Miami (OH) 6-0, 6-1, before winning 7-5, 6-3 over Ball State. Both wins came at the No. 2 position. 

In doubles competition, Tye and partner Amanda de Oliveira went 1-0. The duo fell to Miami (OH), but competed to a 6-6 tie before the doubles match came to a halt at Ball State. 

Morris had a stellar effort in the win over Central Michigan, tying a career-high seven goals in 22-1 win over Central Michigan. Her seven goals came on eight shots, and all came in the game's first 33:36 before she sat out the remainder of the game with the game well in hand. It's tied for the eighth most goals anyone in the nation has scored in a game this season. Marked her third straight game with seven-plus points and fourth in the last five games. She has five games with seven-plus points this season and is now up to 207 career goals, just four from tying and five from breaking UMass' program record.
