Kopec And Marra Earn UMass Student-Athlete Of The Week Nods

The duo will be recognized at this Wednesday’s UMass Sports Luncheon.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts graduate students Kira Kopec of women's track & field and Kelly Marra of women's lacrosse have been selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The duo will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons at noon.
 
Kopec took the top spot in heptathlon at the UConn Northeast Challenge out of 11 competitors in the event with a score of 5,156 to improve her No. 2 all-time mark in the UMass record book. The Brooks, Alberta native swept the final five events of the competition including all three day two events to cement her victory. She began the competition by posting a time of 14.35 seconds to claim the runner-up spot in 100 meter hurdles for 929 points, the fifth-fastest time in program history. 
 
Marra led the Minutewomen to a 2-0 week last week, logging eight goals and two assists over the pair of contests. In UMass' victory over La Salle, she contributed three goals and one assist, followed by a prolific performance against Saint Joseph's on Saturday in which she scored five goals and tallied one assist. The Minutewomen now sit at 8-0 in league play with Marra ranked third in the Atlantic 10 in goals per-game.
