Women's Basketball Falls To Davidson, 76-67

Breen led with 26 points while Philoxy earns 10 of her own.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to Davidson College, 76-67, on Sunday afternoon at the John. M. Belk Arena. Graduate student Sam Breen and senior Destiney Philoxy both completed the game with 10-plus points, accumulating 26 and 10, respectively.
UMass dropped to 21-6 overall on the season and 9-4 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Davidson improved to 14-12 overall and 5-9 in the league.
Breen also led the team in rebounds, tallying nine, while her and Ber'Nyah Mayo had a team-high three assists each. Mayo swiped the ball a total of four times to lead the team in the category on the day.
Massachusetts and Davidson were even on the boards with 36 apiece. UMass shot 75.7 percent from the free throw line and outscored the Wildcats 34-22 in points in the paint.
UMass got off to a slow start in the first quarter, as Davidson opened the scoring early with a three-point shot. Angelique Ngalakulondi made a layup at 9:10 to make it a 3-2 game, but another three for the Wildcats put them up 6-2. The Minutewomen came back within two, thanks to Breen's jumper. Davidson, though, went on a 14-2 run that elapsed three minutes and 20 seconds to go up 20-6.
With Davidson leading 20-9 to begin the second quarter, Breen made a driving layup that put Massachusetts in double figures. The Minutewomen were down by seven after a good jumper from Sydney Taylor, but a couple of free throws pushed Davidson ahead 22-13. UMass and Davidson traded six points apiece, with the Wildcats leading 28-20. Mayo knocked down UMass' first triple of the day at the 2:38 mark to close the gap to six, with a score of 31-25, before a free throw and a three-pointer gave Davidson four points to increase its lead to 35-25 to end the first half.
The Minutewomen went on a 7-0 run that started at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter to close the gap at 37-32, but a triple from the Wildcats extended their lead. Massachusetts and Davidson kept the scoring close to finish out the third, with Philoxy scoring nine of the Minutewomen's points. The quarter ended with a 57-50 score, in favor of Davidson.
Breen made back-to-back buckets to start the final frame, bringing UMass back within three. A 6-2 run for Davidson pulled the Wildcats ahead, 63-56. UMass added four more points shortly after to make a 63-60 contest, but the Wildcats collected 13 more points to Massachusetts' seven.
Massachusetts returns to the Mullins Center for its final home game of the regular season, welcoming VCU on Wednesday, February 23. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m., on ESPN+.
