No. 2-Seeded Massachusetts Field Hockey Embarks On Atlantic 10 Tournament, Hosts No. 3-Seeded Lock Haven On Thursday

The Minutewomen will host this year's Atlantic 10 Championship tournament and will fight for a spot in Saturday's championship game on Thursday afternoon.

AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 2-seeded University of Massachusetts field hockey team will embark in Atlantic 10 Semifinal play when they take on the No. 3-seeded Lock Haven Bald Eagles on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. This match will follow the No. 1 Saint Joseph's/No. 4 VCU match, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. All Atlantic 10 Championship matches will be streamed on ESPN+.

Last Time Out
The Minutewomen went 1-1 in their final two games of regular season action. Massachusetts defeated Lock Haven on Friday by a score of 4-0. Bella Ianni, Claire Danahy, Jess Beech, and Mali Herberhold each notched a goal on the day. On Sunday, the Minutewomen were bested by Northeastern, falling by a score of 3-2.

Scouting the Bald Eagles
Lock Haven finished out the season with a 13-5 overall record and 5-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Martina Spangenberg leads the team in goals (10), with Jazmin Palma following (8). Amy Stevens has recorded a team-high five assists, with Ellie Mead following closely behind with four. Palma has also registered 33 shots on goal so far this season. Goalkeeper Kelsey Felix has started in 16 games in the cage, recording 62 saves on 160 shots faced.

Massachusetts Boasts Eight Postseason Atlantic 10 Award Winners
The Minutewomen were victorious in conference postseason awards, as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Mali Herberhold collected three accolades, including Massachusetts' first Rookie of the Year award since 2014, as well as a spot on the All-Conference Second Team and the All-Rookie Team. Senior Jess Beech and freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen were named to the All-Conference First Team, while junior Claire Danahy, Herberhold, and seniors Bella Ianni and Josie Rossbach were named to the All-Conference Second Team. Massachusetts was represented by Herberhold and Gabrielle Benkenstein on the All-Rookie Team, while Beech, Steph Gottwals, and Rossbach were selected for the All-Academic Team.

UMass in the Atlantic 10 Tournament
Massachusetts last hosted the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey tournament in 2017, when they lost in 2OT to Saint Joseph's in the Championship match. In 31 Atlantic 10 Semifinal games, the Minutewomen are 24-7. Their last Atlantic 10 Championship came in 2016, when they bested Saint Joseph's by a score of 2-1.
