Makar And Zielonka Earn UMass Student-Athlete Of The Week Recognition

The duo from hockey and men's soccer will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey sophomore Taylor Makar and men's soccer junior Nick Zielonka have been tabbed the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive, it was announced on Tuesday. They will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, November 2, in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons.

Lunch runs from Noon to 1 p.m. with the speaking program beginning at approximately 12:15 p.m. This week's featured speakers are Juancarlos Nunez and a representative from the football coaching staff. Cost of the lunch is $14 at the door, $10 for UMass alumni.

Makar scored the overtime game winner in UMass' 3-2 victory over Merrimack at the Mullins Center last Friday and recorded his first career assist. The victory moved the Minutemen to 5-0-1 on the season prior to Saturday's setback, which marked the best start to the season for UMass since 1971-72.Â

Zielonka netted a goal and picked up an assist in a 2-1 win over Dayton as the Minutemen secured an eight-seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship on the final day of play on Saturday. The junior headed in the equalizing goal in the 53rd-minute to tie the score at 1-1 and connected with Alec Hughes for the game-winning goal with just 19 seconds remaining.
