Massachusetts Topped By No. 17 Coastal Carolina

September 25, 2021 | Football

The Minutemen return home to host Toledo for Family Weekend at McGuirk Alumni Stadium next Saturday.

CONWAY, S.C. – A nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina squad proved to be too much for Massachusetts football on Saturday at Brooks Stadium as the Minutemen (0-4) fell to the #17 Chanticleers (4-0), 53-3.

UMass' lone score of the day came at the 8:22 mark of the fourth quarter, a 35-yard field goal by Cameron Carson, his first of the season.

Brady Olson was 14 for 23 and threw for 86 yards in his third straight start before being relieved by Garrett Dzuro. Rico Arnold caught four passes for 38 yards. Ellis Merriweather and Kay'Ron Adams both had six carries for 30 and 25 yards, respectively. Avien Peah, Te'Rai Powell and Gerrell Johnson registered six tackles apiece.

For Coastal, quarterback Grayson McCall was 10 for 14 for 162 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and took another into the end zone himself. Jaivon Heiligh led the Chants' receiving corps with 118 yards on five receptions and a TD.

A blocked Minutemen punt led to a Coastal touchdown after the Chants recovered the ball at the UMass four yard line with 11:41 to play in the first quarter. Coastal added another score at the 2:58 mark of the opening stanza, a 12-yard rush for Reese White.

The Chanticleers put up 23 in the second quarter and a pair of touchdowns in the third before the teams traded field goals in the final frame.

UMass will be back in action next Saturday, October 2, when the squad will host Toledo for Family Weekend at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
