Postgame Quotes: Head Coach Walt Bell vs. Toledo (Oct. 2, 2021)

General thoughts on today’s game
“Today I thought our defense played really well early on in the football game. They got some big third down stops early on, and the punting did an incredible job. There were phases of the game that were really good and better than they had been, but ultimately at the end of the day offensively we shot ourselves in the foot not playing good football. That’s on me. That’s my job to have Brady Olson and the quarterbacks prepared, and I did not. We had execution errors, the fourth and one we had an error, and that’s my job to have these guys prepared to play football and I never gave them a shot.”

On Brady Olson’s play on Saturday
“Brady had a couple critical errors, and more than anything else just trying to get him to relax. In his situation, as a young guy the most important thing you can do is not let it pile on and make it worse than it is. But Brady is going to be an exceptional player, he just didn’t have his best stuff today. That’s my fault. He is unbelievable at handling adversity. When he makes a mistake, he lets it roll off his back and he is going to be a great player, but at that moment in time just a couple big critical mistakes were made.”

On the offense
“We set out to run the football, and we didn’t run the football successfully knowing that they’re a really good defense. We didn’t move the ball early enough to take the pressure off of Brady, so Brady got put into some really hard positions. We’ve got to continue to fight to run the football and we weren’t really able to do that. That put our quarterbacks into some hard situations.”

On the defense
“Offensively we put those guys in a bunch of short fields, and when our defense had grass behind them they played good defense and got some stops and that’s a step in the right direction with a really young group, but offensively we got to help those guys out. So many times they went right back on the field. Offensively we did not help our defense and we did not play good complimentary football.”
