The 6-3, 192-pound forward is a 2020 sixth round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added 6-3, 192-pound right shot forward Lucas Mercuri to its roster for 2021-22, it was announced on Wednesday. Mercuri, a 2020 draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, comes to UMass from the Des Moines Buccaneers out of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He joins graduate transfer forwards Matt Baker and Cam Donaldson, transfer defenseman Slava Demin and freshman forwards Eric DeDobbelaer, Ryan Lautenbach and Taylor Makar as the seventh member of the Minutemen's incoming recruiting class.
"Lucas is a very talented center who was a sixth round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in last year's draft," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Lucas has great size, 6-3, to go along with a really impressive offensive mind for the game. His offensive vision and instincts are fun to watch as he makes tremendous plays with the puck but he also has a nose for the net in scoring goals. We expect Lucas to be an important offensive player from early on and hope to see him move on to the NHL someday once his game is fully developed."
Mercuri played 48 career games with Des Moines and totaled 37 points on 13 goals and 24 assists. The Montreal, Quebec, native played two seasons of prep hockey at Salisbury where he wore an "A" and helped the school to a prep championship. A BEAST 18U National First Team and Second Team All-New England Team (West) selection, Mercuri amassed 83 points (39g, 44a) in 58 games at Salsbury. He was selected 159th overall by the Hurricanes in 2020.
