June 10, 2021 | Men's Basketball

AMHERST, Mass. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the 2021-22 men's basketball league pairings on Thursday with Massachusetts slated to play home-and-away games against Fordham, George Mason, La Salle, Rhode Island and Saint Louis.

The Minutemen will also host Duquesne, George Washington, Saint Joseph's and VCU.

Road games for the UMass will be trips to Davidson, Dayton, Richmond and St. Bonaventure.

Each team will play every A-10 opponent once, and five conference foes twice. The 2022 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship will be played March 9-13 and will return to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The complete 2021-22 conference schedule with dates and times, as well as national television information, will be released at a later date.

UMass is coming off a 2020-21 campaign that saw the Minutemen finish 8-7 and 6-4 in A-10 play in a season littered with starts and stops. UMass had 17 games cancelled throughout the COVID-19 shortened season, yet managed to secure the No. 5 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship, its highest since 2008. The Minutemen advanced to the conference quarterfinals for the first time since 2016 after recording the largest margin of victory in Atlantic 10 Championship history with a 34-point win over Saint Joseph's (100-66) in the second round of the championship.

The Minutemen, who finished first in the Atlantic 10 in scoring last season (76.7 points per game), return one of the top point guards in the conference in junior Noah Fernandes. The team's leading returning scorer, Fernandes averaged 11.1 points per game and shot 43% from the field during his first season in Amherst. The Mattapoisett, Mass. native also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game in more than 30 minutes of action per game, and finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 with an assist to turnover ratio of 2.19.

Fernandes will be flanked by T.J. Weeks Jr., who played in all 15 games last season after returning from an injury that shortened his 2019-20 campaign. Weeks Jr. averaged 9.7 points per game and shot 30% from three in 20.5 minutes per game, reaching double-figures nine times.

The Minutemen will also welcome a group of five newcomers in 2021-22: Trent Buttrick, Greg Jones, C.J. Kelly, Rich Kelly and Michael Steadman
