Undergraduate transfer spent prior two years at the University of Texas Arlington
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis and head coach Juancarlos Nunez announced the addition of undergraduate transfer Polina Akimova to the team on Thursday. Akimova arrives following two seasons of competition at the University of Texas Arlington primarily in the No. 1-3 singles and No. 1 doubles spots.
"We're very excited to welcome Polina into the UMass family," said Nunez. "She is a fierce competitor and committed to helping our program continue to grow. During her two seasons at UT Arlington, she established herself in the top positions of the lineup and helped her team become Sun Belt regular season champions this past Spring. She knows what it takes to compete against the best players that each team has to offer. We can't wait to see her in Amherst this Fall."
Akimova won 19 singles matches and nine doubles matches across her two seasons at UT Arlington, which included four victories at No. 1 singles and seven at No. 1 doubles. Her role on the team in 2020-21 helped propel the Mavericks to an undefeated Sun Belt Conference season and the No. 1 seed in the SBC Tournament as UT Arlington finished 18-4 overall and 8-0 in SBC matches.
The Novosibirsk, Russia, native holds a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking of No. 1,092. She joins a UMass tennis roster that currently includes Dylan Cannon, Renata Farima, Danielle Hack, Mariya Krasakova, Anna Napadiy and Helena Narmont.
