Former Massachusetts offensive lineman is the 31st UMass football draft selection all-time

AMHERST, Mass. – The Miami Dolphins on Saturday selected University of Massachusetts football alumnus Larnel Coleman in the seventh round with the 231st overall selection. Coleman, the 31st UMass football draft selection all-time, is the sixth pick of the FBS era (since 2012). He is the fifth offensive lineman to be picked in program history and first since the New York Jets selected Vladimir Ducasse in 2010.

In addition, Massachusetts has now had an alumnus selected in three consecutive NFL Drafts, a first for the program in the FBS era. In that current run, wide receiver Andy Isabella was picked by the Arizona Cardinals (2019) and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers landed with the Indianapolis Colts (2020).

Coleman has been a mainstay up front for Massachusetts appearing in every game since the 2017 season. The Malden, Massachusetts native moved into a starting role in 2018, spending his redshirt sophomore campaign at right tackle, before moving to left tackle in all 16 games during 2019 and 2020.

In a 2020 campaign shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, Coleman was tabbed to the Outland Trophy Watch List as one of the top interior linemen in FBS football. It also marked the second consecutive year that Coleman was placed on the Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team.

While at right tackle, Coleman anchored a Minutemen line in 2018 that protected for a squad ranking 14th in FBS in passing offense (298.1 yards per game), 16th in passing efficiency (153.91) and 34th in total offense (437.6 yards per game). He blocked for the offense as UMass posted a program-record 777 total offensive yards against the Liberty defense, the fourth-most in FBS for a single game that year.

Following a redshirt campaign in 2016, he came onto the scene in '17 and helped Massachusetts average 30.6 points and 432.8 yards of total offense per game. The Minutemen run game averaged 135.3 yards per contest and Coleman protected for the pass game that put up 297.5 yards on average.

Coleman arrived in Amherst after a standout career at St. Clement High School, where he split time between tight end, defensive end and offensive tackle. He was a three-time all-conference selection.
