UMass Track and Field Finishes Off Multi Meet Wednesday

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts track & field finished up its home Multi Meet on Wednesday at the UMass Track & Field complex, with four Minutewomen and one Minuteman in action at the two-day competition. In heptathlon, Kira Kopec placed second in the field of 12 with a score of 4,954, a personal best and good for second all-time in program history. Freshman Lillian Kirry was fourth with a score of 4,525. Matthew Tarantino, the lone Minuteman competing in the decathlon, earned sixth in a field of eight with a score of 5,542.

Kirry and Kopec tied for second in long jump both recording marks of 17 feet, 9.5 inches for 677 points. Kopec won javelin with a toss of 104 feet, 2 inches for 510 points and Kirry claimed fourth at 93 feet, 5 inches for 448 points.

Kirry won the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 21.26 seconds to collect 806 points and Kopec took third in 2 minutes, 26.75, good for 734 points.

Tarantino opened day two with a sixth-place finish in 110 hurdles at 16.63 seconds for 663 points. He threw 91 feet in discus for seventh (420 points) and cleared 11 feet, 11.75 inches in pole vault for fourth (522 points). In javelin, Tarantino posted a mark of 124 feet 2 inches for fifth and 411 points and ended the competition by taking sixth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 14.41 seconds, picking up 480 points.

The Minutemen and Minutewomen will close out their home schedule this Sunday, April 18, hosting Vermont and Hartford for Senior Day.
