Martinez sets a new all-time mark for UMass in hammer throw.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's track & field won 12 of 18 events to win a tri-meet vs. Boston College and Boston University on Saturday at the UMass Track & Field Complex. The Minutemen posted a team score of 172 points, followed by the Terriers (110) and the Eagles (70).
Freshman Enrique Martinez set a new all-time mark in UMass history in hammer throw for the second time this season, coming in at No. 4. Martinez threw for 180 feet, 2 inches, to place first in the event.
Michael Rodia was victorious in the 100 meter dash at 10.80 seconds and Jordan Howard won the 200 meter dash in 22.04 seconds.
Lucas Honohan clocked in at 48.29 seconds in the 400 meter dash, good for first place, while Colin Stoddard was second (48.58). Honohan and Stoddard were part of the 4x400 meter relay team, along with Jackson Walker and Riley Drew, that took first place with a combined time of 3 minutes, 20.55 seconds.
Patrick Walsh, Felipe Gonzalez, Drew and Andrew Chabon finished the 4x100 meter relay in 42.56 seconds to place first.
freshman Denzel Agyeman claimed first with a time of 15.54 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles and Walker came in second in the 400 meter hurdles at 57.37 seconds.
In the 5,000 meter run, freshman Surafel Mengist crossed the finish line first in 15 minutes, 5.22 seconds. Fellow classmates Michael Norberg (9:28.98) and Matthew George (9:36.48) took first and second, respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Noah Kortkamp grabbed the top mark in long jump, 23 feet, 3.25 inches, followed by Chabon in second with a leap of 22 feet, 7.25 inches.
Coston O'Brien won both shot put (51'9") and discus (139'9"), and placed second in hammer throw (159'6"). Joseph Manchester took second in javelin with a throw of 176 feet, 8 inches.
As Martinez and O'Brien grabbed first and second in the hammer throw, freshmen William Dion and Isaac Passett claimed the next two spots. Dion threw 142 feet, 10 inches, which was good for third, while Passett came in fourth with his toss of 138 feet, 11 inches.
The Minutemen will be back in action April 13-14 when the squad will host a Multi Meet at the UMass Track & Field Complex beginning at 10 a.m.
