Trio Recognized As UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

Sam Breen, C.J. Kelly and Ellis Merriweather will be recognized at the weekly luncheon today.
AMHERST, Mass. – Three student-athletes were named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week presented by UMassFive College Credit Union on Wednesday morning. The trio will be recognized at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon today at 12 p.m. at the Berkshire Dining Commons.

Sam Breen (Gibsonia, Pa.) averaged 16.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game across the 3-1 week for the Minutewomen. The graduate student recorded two double-doubles on the week, including a team-leading 21 points and 12 rebounds in the 76-71 loss to No.13 Iowa State. She went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe both at Providence and against No. 13 Iowa State, while shooting 42.8 percent from behind the arc (3-of-7) vs. Iowa State. At the Gulf Coast Showcase, Breen was named to the All-Tournament Team.Â

C.J. Kelly (Long Island, N.Y.) averaged 18.0 points per game to go along with 4.0 rebounds per contest as the Minutemen picked up a pair of non-conference wins at home last week. The junior poured in a season-high 24 points and shot 8-of-13 from 3-point range in the comeback win over Rutgers on Sunday. In Wednesday's win over UMass Lowell, Kelly shot 50-percent from the field and from 3-point land on his way to scoring 12 points as six Minutemen finished in double figures.

Ellis Merriweather (Alpharetta, Ga.) rushed for 168 yards and scored two touchdowns on the road at New Mexico State on Saturday. The redshirt junior became the first UMass player since 2008 to surpass the 1000-yard rushing mark and is the first to do so in the FBS era.
