Football Falls To Rhode Island, 35-22

Merriweather ran for 118 yards for his fourth 100-plus rushing yard game of the season.

Amherst, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football dropped a 35-22 decision against to the University of Rhode Island at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Homecoming Day on Saturday. Redshirt junior Ellis Merriweather ran for 118 yards with 30 carries, marking his fourth game of the season with 100-plus rushing yards.

Tyler Lytle earned the start and went 15-for-28 for 227 yards. The graduate student recorded two touchdowns, one in the air and one he ran himself. Going along with his 118-yards, Merriweather also ran one-yard for a touchdown. Rico Arnold led the team with six receptions for 99 receiving yards, including a long 25-yard grab.
 
On the other side of the ball, Gerrell Johnson and Billy Wooden both tallied seven tackles apiece. Johnson had one solo and a team-high six assisted tackles, while Wooden matched his career best total on three solo and four assisted tackles.
 
For Rhode Island, Kasem Hill had 169 passing yards, going 11-for-20 on the day, registering two touchdowns. On the ground, Hill found the endzone twice and rushed for 32 yards. Jaylen Smith led the way for URI with 111 yards and one touchdown. Paul Woods caught three balls for 55 yards. Evan Stewart and Andre Blackett logged seven tackles each for the Rams.
 
The Rams opened the scoring with a two-yard run from Hill at the 11:58 mark of the first quarter. Lytle capped an 11 play, 88-yard drive with a three-yard rush himself at 6:06 in the first to make it a 7-6 game.

In the second quarter, Cameron Carson kicked a field goal from 39-yards out that went right through the uprights 12:49 to allow the Minutemen to take a 9-7 lead. URI scored two more touchdowns in the quarter, before Josiah Johnson grabbed a three-yard pass in the endzone from Lytle with 12 seconds left in the first half.
 
Rhode Island added 14 points in the third quarter to extend its lead, 35-16. Merriweather registered six points for UMass to bring the game to its final score.
 
The Minutemen welcome Maine for their home finale on Saturday, November 13, for a 12 p.m. kickoff at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
