Minutemen take 33-17 Loss to West Point

WEST POINT, NY—The University of Massachusetts football team fell 33-17 on the road to the Black Knights of the United States Military Academy on Saturday afternoon.
 
Garrett Dzuro went 7-13 with his first career touchdown pass and two interceptions in the contest with his longest connection being 78 yards.
 
Ellis Merriweatherr accounted for 110 rushing yards on 17 carries, contributing to UMass's 199 yards on the ground. Josiah Johnson scored in his third straight contest for the Minutemen on a one-yard run for the score.
 
It was Cameron Carson who put the Minutemen on the board first on a 45-yard attempt early in the first quarter. Army answered on the next possession on an 87-yard run, after the 2-point conversion took the 8-3 lead.
 
The Minutemen headed into the break down 19-10 and held the Black Knights through the third quarter, only to bring the game within two scores at the 13:52 mark in the fourth.
 
Army would score at 7:22 and again in the final three minutes of play to put the game away 33-17.
 
Gerrell Johnson led the defensive effort for UMass with 14 tackles, one TFL, and one sack for a combined 12 yards. Da'Shon Ross contributed 10 tackles, and Josh Wallace led the secondary with five pass-breakups.
 
The Minutemen will hit the road for their final contest of the 2021 season, finishing at New Mexico State on Saturday, November 27.
