Minutemen Fall in Season Finale on the Road

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Massachusetts football team closed out their 2021 season at New Mexico State University of Saturday, falling to the Aggies 44-27 in their season finale.
 
The Minutemen were led by Ellis Merriweather on the ground with 168 yards and two touchdowns. Surpassing the 1000-yard mark, the first time for a UMass player since 2008. Garrett Dzuro went 12-23 for 124 yards with one touchdown.
 
The Aggies scored early on a 5-yard rush from Juwaun
Price to bring the score to 7-0. It was price who struck again for the Aggies early in the second quarter, but Jared Chisari put the Minutemen on the board with a 30-yard run to bring the score to 14-6 in favor of the hosts.
 
Jared Wyatt connection with Jonah Johnson midway through the second to give the Aggies the 21-6 advantage.
 
With less than two minutes to play Ellis Merriweather found the end zone for UMAss, but NMSU would score one more time heading into the break, missing the PAT. The Minutemen went into the intermission with down 27-13.
 
To open the second half, Garrett Dzuro found Rico Arnold on a 73-yard pass, to bring UMass within one score of their opponent. New Mexico state answered on the next possession to bring the score to 34-27 before Ellis Merriweather took the ball 79 yards for the score.
 
After s 50-yard field goal attempt to start the final frame, the Minutemen faced a 10-point deficit with just over 12 minutes to play.
 
With 7:04 to go in the game, NMSU found the end zone again on a 5-yard pass to bring the score to 44-27 over UMass. The Minutemen would fall to New Mexico State on the road.
 
Donte Lindsey led the charge defensively for the Minutemen with nine total tackles in the loss.
