UMASS OPENS PRE-SEASON GRID PRACTICE FRIDAY

AMHERST---Flashy tailback George Barnwell and record setting quarterback Jim Simeone will be among the 113 athletes who report to second year coach Bob Stull when the University of Massachusetts opens pre-season practice for the 1985 football season on Friday.
Barnwell, a 5'9, 178 pound senior co-captain from Mattapan, finished second in rushing in the Yankee Conference last year when he gained 931 yards and had a 4.8 yards per carry average.
Simeone finished the 1984 season strongly by completing nearly 53 percent of his passes over the final five games. The 6'2, 222 pound senior from Farmington, CT, broke UM single season records in 1984 tor most passes completed (147) and most passes attempted (313). He completed 47 percent of his passes for 1595 yards.
Leading the Minutemen on defense will be co-captain Paul Platek, a 5'10, 185 pound senior safety from Essex Jct., VT. Platek led last year's team in fumble recoveries with four and tied for the team lead with four interceptions.
Other offensive starters from 1984 who return for 1985 include fullback Frank Fay (5'8", 170, Sr., Tewksbury) guard Stan Kaczorowski (6'2, 250, Jr., Scotch Plains, NJ), tackle Mike Briggs (6'2, 245, Sr., Oxford, CT) and flanker John Crowley (5' 10, 170, Jr., Leominster).
Defensively, returning starters who will report to pre-season camp in 1985 are linebacker Vito Perrone (6'4, 220, So., Manchester, CT), nose guard Mike Dwyer (6'2, 265, Sr., Hyannis), defensive tackle Ed Sullivan (6'4, 250, Sr., Cambridge), cornerbacks Chris Wood (5'10, 200, Sr., New Rochelle, NY) and Carlos Silva (5''9, 175, Sr., Stoughton) and Platek. In addition, Bruce Strange (6'3, 235, So., Wilbraham) started at defensive tackle when Sullivan was injured.
Perrone, the leading tackler on last year's team with 127, moves from inside to outside linebacker.
Coach Stull and the UM staff will be in the search of receivers. Split end Bob Simeone and tight end Paul Walsh, the top two receivers aside from runningbacks in 1984, both graduated.
UMass opens the 1985 season against Morgan State in Amherst on Sept. 7 at 1:30. The Minutemen will conduct two-a-day practices tram Saturday until Labor Day weekend.
