Mass Impact: Paul "Pit" Martin

January 26, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse, The Minutemen Club

AMHERST, Mass. -- Welcome to Mass Impact, presented by the UMassFive College Credit Union! Mass Impact is a series featuring alumni discussing how their experiences at the University of Massachusetts helped shape their lives and made them the people they are today.

Today, Paul "Pit" Martin reflects on the impact his UMass men's lacrosse career had on his professional career as a financial services consultant.

What transferable skills did you learn as a student-athlete that have helped you be successful in your field?
As a student-athlete, you learn how to contribute one's skills to the team's needs.  The same goes for living in a family, working in a business, getting along with your neighbors, getting along with people from different backgrounds, different countries, languages, etc.

Who had the greatest influence on you during your time at UMass?
Coach Garber, friends in Lewis dorm on the quad, my year spent in Freiburg, Germany through the UMass German department (Prof. Wolfgang Paulson, Professor Eva Schiffer, Susan Cocalus, etc.).

How did being a Division I student-athlete help shape who you are today?
I'm good with time management and that helped me through games, classes, tests, working with partners in the business world, etc. The time management is a given for student-athletes.

How has UMass Athletics left a lasting impact on your life?
For me it's the lasting relationships I have through the Athletic Department. Within the last 10 days, two teammates and I have been trading pictures and stories with one another. It's like talking with your family.
