Mitchell Drops 24 As UMass Tops Fordham On The Road, 65-46

January 17, 2021 | Men's Basketball

BRONX, N.Y. – The UMass men's basketball team (5-3, 4-1) used a 52% shooting performance to open up a 29-point halftime lead to coast to a 65-46 victory over Fordham on Sunday at Rose Hill Gym. Sophomore Tre Mitchell led the way with 24 points to pace two Minutemen in double-figures on the day as UMass secured its best start to conference play since the 2013-14 season and moved into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings.

Mitchell finished the day 7-of-18 from the floor to record double-figures for the 31st straight game. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the line. T.J. Weeks Jr. had 11 points, all in the first half, on 3-of-10 shooting (2-of-5 from three) for a UMass team that shot 34% (20-of-59) overall and 10-of-28 from deep and turned 16 Rams turnovers into 21 points. Ronnie DeGray III (eight points, 10 rebounds) and Carl Pierre (nine points, five rebounds) also had strong days for Massachusetts.

The Minutemen were red hot from the field to start the game, shooting 52% overall and going 9-of-14 from three to open up a commanding lead on the Rams in the field half, 44-15. Mitchell had 13 and 5 while Weeks Jr. contributed 11 off the bench on the offensive side while the defense held Fordham to a 7-of-26 start, the fewest points allowed in a half since Dec. 22, 2017 against Maine (15).

Massachusetts used runs to 13-0 and 16-2 to take control early with six different Minutemen finding the scoresheet.

It was more of the same for the visitors to start the second half, using an 8-0 run to build on its lead to go up by as many as 35 with 15:58 to play. The Rams would continue to fight, though, chipping away at the deficit over the final 15 minutes to pull within 17 after a 10-2 run with 4:17 to play.

The Rams were led by Joel Soriano's 12 points on 6-of-13 from the floor along with 12 rebounds while Chris Austin added 10 points for a Fordham team that shot 37% (19-of-51) overall and just 2-of-11 from deep.
