Tre Mitchell scored 18 points and had seven rebounds for the Minutemen
RICHMOND – Freshman Tre Mitchell had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the UMass basketball team (13-16, 7-9) on Saturday at Richmond, but the Spiders (22-7, 12-4) shot 55% and had five players in double figures to run past the Minutemen at the Robins Center, 95-71.
Blake Francis (20), Nick Sherod (16), Nathan Cayo (14), Grant Golden (13) and Jacob Gilyard (10 points, 10 assists) all reached double figures for the Spiders, who were 32-of-58 overall and 10-of-24 from three while outrebounding the Minutemen 41-26.
Dibaji Walker added 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench for a UMass team that was 26-of-63 from the floor on the night.
The Spiders held UMass to a 10-of-31 shooting performance in the first half and used a 14-0 run midway through to take a commanding lead at the break. Grant Golden led the way for the hosts with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes, while the Spiders shot 63% overall (7-of-13 from three) and outrebounded Massachusetts 22-11 to take control.
Keon Clergeot provided a spark off the bench after the first media timeout, providing six points and two boards along with his team-leading 19 taken charge of the year. It was the 14-0 run over 4:28, though, that put Richmond up by 19 with eight minutes until the break, with Grant and Jake Wojcik combining for 12 of the points.
Richmond continued its hot shooting early in the second half, using an 11-2 run over three minutes to maintain its lead despite Mitchell going to work for the Minutemen to get into double-figures for the 27th time in 29 games this season.
The Minutemen will remain out on the road when Massachusetts travels to Philadelphia for a Wednesday matchup at La Salle. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
