Hot Shooting Leads Davidson Past Massachusetts

Tre Mitchell had a team-high 14 points for the Minutemen
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson (11-10, 5-4) used a 77% shooting performance in the first half to bolt out to a big lead early on the UMass men's basketball team (9-13, 3-6), knocking off the Minutemen on Saturday night at Belk Arena, 85-50.
Tre Mitchell had a team-high 14 points with six rebounds for Massachusetts, while Preston Santos also reached double figures with 10 points (4-of-8).
Five Wildcats reached double figures, led by Kellen Grady's 19 points (8-of-9 shooting) as Davidson shot 72% overall on the night and 11-of-17 from three. Jon Axel Gudmunsson added 15 points and a game-high seven assists.
Hyunjung Lee and Luka Brajkovic (10 points) combined for an 8-of-11 performance from the floor and 21 points in the opening 20 minutes to set the tone for the Wildcats, which used runs of 16-2 and 18-3 to break it open early.
At the other end, Carl Pierre and Tre Mitchell had seven points apiece for a Minuteman squad that struggled from the floor out of the gates (9-of-26).
The hot shooting continued into the second half for Davidson, which started the half 7-of-10 to maintain its lead.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Tuesday night when Massachusetts travels to Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. tipoff on CBSSN
