Tre Mitchell scores season-high 30 points on 13-of-20 night from the floor
KINGSTON, R.I. – Freshman Tre Mitchell put on a show for the UMass men's basketball team (9-14, 3-7), dropping 30 points on 13-of-20 from the floor, but Fatts Russell had 21 points (16 in the second half) to lead three Rams in double figures to lead Rhode Island (17-5, 9-1) past the Minutemen on Tuesday night at The Ryan Center, 73-67.
Â
Mitchell topped his previous season-high of 28 points en route to the most points from a UMass freshman since Rashuan Freeman had 31 on Feb. 28, 2004.
Â
Overall, the Minutemen shot 48% (29-of-61) from the floor but struggled from beyond the arc at 4-of-19, while URI was 26-of-55 from the floor and 5-of-14. Carl Pierre also reached double figures with 10 points while Samba Diallo added eight points and five rebounds.
Â
After the Minutemen found themselves in a 10-2 hole less than four minutes in, the offense went to work led by Mitchell's 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Neither team allowed the other to go on more than a 6-0 run in the first as UMass shot 41% (12-of-29) and URI 54% (14-of-26).
Â
The Minutemen were also able to weather some early foul trouble as Samba Diallo, Dibaji Walker and Preston Santos all picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes, which sent Djery Baptiste into the game for eight minutes resulting in two big dunks with less than three minutes left before the break.
Â
Team teams continued to go punch for punch in the second half, again with neither team opening up a run of more than six points. While Rhode Island would build its lead up to 11 points with just over 12 minutes to go, Mitchell maintained his domination down low with 19 more points in the second half to keep the Minutemen in it.
Â
It was Russell, though, who had it going down the stretch for the hosts, dropping 16 in the final 20 minutes to keep the Rams on top, and held off a late Minuteman surge that trimmed a 14-point deficit down to six in the final two minutes.
Â
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday afternoon when Massachusetts hosts George Mason in the first of three straight games at the Mullins Center. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on NBCSN.
