Dayton came out blazing to start the game, opening 5-of-7 from the floor and using an early 14-2 run to start the game. Pierre and Mitchell went to work from there, scoring seven and five points in the first 20 minutes, respectively. Mitchell would nail back-to-back threes to give the Minutemen a bit of momentum, but an 8-3 Dayton run put the hosts back up big before a Crutcher three at the buzzer, three of his eight first half points.
Â
Toppin led the way with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the first half, while Ryan Mikesell took care of the glass with a team-high eight rebounds to go along with eight points for the Flyers, who shot 59% (20-of-34) in the first.Â
Â
Mitchell went to work out of the break, scoring six of UMass' first nine points in the second half at the Minutemen looked to chip away at the deficit, but Dayton continued to bring it with a pair of Fastbreak layins from Trey Landers to keep the Flyers in control. Massachusetts held the Flyers without a field goal for better than three minutes midway through the half, allowing Dibaji Walker to put home five straight before Samba Diallo took it to the rim hard with less than 10 minutes to play.
Â
The Minutemen will be back in action on Wednesday night when Massachusetts travels to Rochester, N.Y. to take on St. Bonaventure at Blue Cross Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
