Minutewomen break from Atlantic 10 play next weekend
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to Richmond, 2-1, in a defensive battle at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday. The setback drops the Minutewomen to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while Richmond is now 6-4 and 2-1 in the league.
Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder registered seven saves and her Richmond counterpart, Frankie-Lynne Conklin, had four saves in the win.
The Spiders were first to the scoreboard in just the sixth minute when Elise Zwicklbauer received a pass along the right sideline, cut into the circle and went top-shelf from just right of the penalty spot.
Less than four minutes later Massachusetts leveled the score at one-all. Sophomore Sophie Johnson came up with a cross-field pass just outside the 25-yard line, then put a perfectly-timed long ball through traffic and into the circle. Senior Sophie de Jonge was camped at the right post for the tip home, her first goal of the season and second of her career. Johnson's assist on the play was her first recorded point this year.
The sides played a scoreless middle two quarters before Richmond pulled in front with just under 12 minutes remaining. Zwicklbauer inserted a penalty corner directly to Steffie Bongers whose quick shot snuck through for the game-winning tally.
Van Tonder was lifted for an extra field player with 6:07 left in regulation, but the Maroon and White were unable to find the equalizer.
Richmond led in shots on goal, 9-5, and earned seven penalty corners to UMass' three.
The Minutewomen pause conference play next weekend and continue a four-game homestand vs. in-state rival Northeastern on Fri., Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
