Rodgers resets career kick return yardage record during loss to the Chanticleers

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts football running back Bilal Ally rushed for a pair of touchdowns and sophomore safety Joseph Norwood posted a career high nine tackles, but UMass fell to the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 62-28, at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

Ally ran for 42 yards on 11 carries. Andrew Brito started at quarterback and went 14-for-25 with 100 passing yards. Redshirt senior Randall West stepped into the lineup at quarterback in the third quarter and went 8-for-11 for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Redshirt sophomore Zak Simon was the top target for Brito and West, with five catches for 74 yards and a TD. Redshirt junior Brennon Dingle added four grabs covering 65 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown strike.

In addition to Norwood's nine tackles, four Minutemen followed with five tackles apiece in Martin Mangram, Cole McCubrey, Dennis Osagiede and Johnathon Weir. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Tyris Lebeau also posted his first collegiate interception.

Senior starting cornerback and kick and punt return specialist Isaiah Rodgers reset the program record for kick return yards during the game as he posted 240 over six attempts, an average of 40.0 per return. It gave Rodgers 1,477 career kick return yards over 59 attempts, an average of 25.0 per return.

Coastal Carolina scored first on their opening drive via a CJ Marable 10-yard run, but the Minutemen answered with a rushing score of their own later in the first quarter.

Lebeau gave the Minuteman offense a short field to work with when Lebeau stepped in front of a Fred Payton pass and brought it back 13 yards to the Chanticleers' 12 yard line. Two plays later, Ally found the endzone from five yards away.

Coastal Carolina connected on two straight scoring drives before Ally found the endzone again and cut the deficit to 21-14 with six minutes, 28 seconds to go in the half. Ally made good on an 11-play, 46-yard drive when he rumbled through the middle of the Coastal Carolina defense for the score.

However, the Chanticleers offense followed with five straight scoring possessions as Coastal Carolina pushed its lead to 56-14 midway through the third quarter.

Massachusetts found the endzone twice more in the game when West connected with Dingle on a 30-yard touchdown as time expired in the third quarter and West found Simon from 23 yards out. It marked Dingle and Simon's first touchdowns of the season.

Marable finished with 100 yards rushing for Coastal Carolina on 15 carries, including two for touchdowns. Payton was 16-for-18 with 203 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception. Bryce Carpenter was 7-of-8 with 104 passing yards and two touchdowns thrown while he added 102 yards rushing on 12 carries.

The Minutemen wrap up their two-game homestand on Sat., Sept. 28 with a contest against Akron at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Ticket information is available through 866-UMASS-TIX.
