The pair each scored twice in their team’s respective contests over the weekend.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer sophomore Graham Brenner and women's soccer freshman Melissa Kössler were tabbed the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week presented by UMassFive College Credit Union for their performances on the pitch last week. The pair will be honored at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon tomorrow afternoon with guest speakers field hockey head coach Barb Weinberg and football recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach Jon Bills.
Brenner (Londonderry, N.H.) scored twice and helped UMass pick up its fourth shutout of the year in a 6-0 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday evening. The sophomore defender jumpstarted a six-goal second half for the Minutemen with the opening goal of the contest in the 62nd-minute before adding the sixth and final goal in the 86th-minute as the Minutemen scored the most goals by a UMass squad in a single game since 2002.
Kössler (Potsdam, Germany) factored in all three goals this past Sunday on her way to being named the Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week as UMass climbed back from a 2-0 deficit and then answered a 3-2 deficit in the second half against No. 21-ranked Tennessee. The freshman finished the 3-3 draw with five points on two goals and an assist, including the tying goal in the 86th-minute.
