Baseball, men's lacrosse and rowing represented for highlight performances

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Sports Luncheon Committee announced on Tuesday that Justin Lasko (baseball), Isaac Paparo (men's lacrosse) and the rowing pair of Aiste Balciunaite and Kelley Glennon have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union. All will be recognized on Wed., April 17 at the UMass Sports Luncheon at noon in Berkshire Dining Commons.

Guest speakers at the luncheon will be senior associate athletic director/SWA Kirsten Britton as well as head football coach Walt Bell.

Balciunaite and Glennon's performance at the Knecht Cup led to a first place finish (8:23.18) for the Minutewomen in the Pair Grand Final on Sun., April 14 as the Maroon and White tabbed the top three spots in the event. In heat competition on Saturday, all but two UMass boats reached their respective Grand Finals. Only the Varsity Four (7:52.86), which was a mere three-tenths of a second behind fourth-place Stanford for the last spot, and the Varsity Eight which clocked in at 6:49.23 among a field including several fast crews, missed their Grand Finals.

Lasko was remarkable on the mound in the George Washington series opener (Fri., April 12), going the distance for his second complete game shutout of 2019 and third such performance of his career. Lasko allowed only four hits, struck out seven and walked only one batter in his outing, which saw him face only one over the minimum through four innings. In five different innings, Lasko retired the side in order. He received a burst of help from his offense with an eight-run seventh inning, giving the Minutemen the lead in a game that was scoreless to that point.

Paparo pushed UMass to its 14-10 upset win at No. 9 nationally-ranked Towson on Sat., April 13 with a career-high-tying seven groundballs, a caused turnover and one goal on his only shot of the game. Three of his groundballs immediately led to UMass goals, including two in the first quarter and one in the second as UMass built a 10-2 lead. He also offset Towson's first goal of the fourth quarter as the Tigers attempted to mount a furious rally win his seventh long-pole score of the year only 12 seconds after Towson's goal. Defeating No. 9 Towson marked UMass' first win over a top-10 nationally-ranked team since March 12, 2016 when Massachusetts downed No. 10 North Carolina on Garber Field, 14-9.
