AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse junior Kaitlyn Cerasi, softball sophomore Kiara Oliver and men's lacrosse senior Sean Sconone earned UMass Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, as announced by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee. The trio will be recognized at Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon hosted at the Berkshire Dining Commons from Noon to 1 p.m.
Cerasi led UMass to a pair of wins to open Atlantic 10 play as the Minutewomen picked up victories on the road at Davidson, 20-9, and at home against VCU, 22-14. The junior attack quarterbacked an offense which averaged 21 goals in the two games while she accounted for seven goals and five assists on the weekend. Oliver struck out nine and went 1-0 in the circle as the Minutewomen opened up Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader sweep of St. Bonaventure on Sunday in Boston. Oliver tossed 7.0 innings in a complete game 5-1 win over the Bonnies in game one, striking out seven while allowing just three hits and one earned run. In game two of the doubleheader, Oliver struck out both batters she faced with the tying run on second base on her way to setting a single-season program mark for saves in a season while tying Brandice Balschmiter (2006-09) for most saves in a career at UMass (6).
Sconone made 16 saves, grabbed two groundballs and caused one turnover in limiting the high-octane Brown offense throughout Massachusetts' 14-7 win over the Bears. He only allowed five of those seven Brown goals during 57:03 in net before leaving with a 14-5 lead late in the fourth. The senior goalie made 11 of his 16 saves over the pivotal second and third quarters, during which UMass limited Brown to two total goals as Massachusetts turned a 3-1 margin after one quarter into a 12-3 advantage entering the fourth.
