Men’s Hoops Falls To Fordham, 85-67

Carl Pierre scored a team-high 19 points while Unique McLean added 10 points and six assists.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team connected on nearly 61-percent of their shots from the field in the second half to make a late comeback attempt in an eventual 85-67 loss to Fordham on Wednesday night in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (8-15 Overall, 1-9 Atlantic 10) were led offensively by Carl Pierre's 19 points that included 11 in the second half.
 
Pierre opened up the final 20 minutes by connecting from range on the first UMass possession of the second half on his way to shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from deep. The sophomore connected on another before Kieran Hayward dropped in back-to-back 3-pointers to bring UMass back within 18 after falling behind by 30 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Hayward added nine points for UMass off the bench in the second half.
 
The Minutemen responded to their largest deficit of the night by outscoring the Rams (10-12 Overall, 1-8 Atlantic 10) 23-6 to pull within 13 at 72-59 with 6:12 remaining after a pair of Unique McLean free throws. McLean chipped in 10 points off the bench to go along with team-highs in rebounds and assists with six apiece.
 
Fordham went on an 8-0 run to follow after the Minutemen came with 13 points of the lead to stretch their advantage out to 21 points at 80-59 after a 3-pointer from Antwon Portley. Portley led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-13 from the field while Nick Honor added 18.
 
The Rams used a 10-of-15 shooting start to build their lead to 13 points early in the first half while forcing the Minutemen into 11 turnovers in the opening 20. Fordham shot over 63-percent from the field in the first half including 50-percent from range to take a 47-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. The visitors finished the night at nearly 61-percent shooting while UMass was held to 49-percent from the field.
 
The Minutemen continue their two-game homestand this weekend when they play host to Davidson on Saturday at 1 p.m.
