Rashaan Holloway nets career-high 23 points in loss.
PHILADELPHIA - Despite a career-high 23 points as part of a double-double with 12 rebounds for UMass' Rashaan Holloway, a late rally by Saint Joseph's led the Hawks past the Minutemen 64-62 on Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena. UMass held a five-point lead after the midway point of the second half, but St. Joe's managed a comeback in the final five minutes of play to hold on for the home win.
UMass (8-13, 1-8 A-10) will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at home against Fordham.
The Minutemen were led by Holloway's game-high 23 points (10-of-13 FG) as the Elmer, N.J., native recorded his second straight double-double and the third of the season. Curtis Cobb added 13 points and five rebounds alongside a career-high seven assists, while Keon Clergeot notched 11 points.
Saint Joseph's (10-12, 3-6 A-10) was led by 20 points from Charlie Brown, Jr., and 14 points from Lorenzo Edwards. Jared Bynum talled 10 points to round out the Hawks' top scorers.
After trailing by six at the intermission, the Minutemen used an 11-to-0 run early in the second half to build out a 48-43 lead at the 13:16 mark thanks to six points by Clergeot in that stretch. UMass maintained that lead for the next five minutes until the Hawks began to chip away.
Five straight free throws for St. Joe's tied the game, 50-50, with 7:22 to go, and the game went back-and-forth for the next three minutes. An 8-to-0 run put the Hawks back up by six, 60-50, with under two minutes remaining. UMass was able to cut the lead to two on a Holloway dunk with 27 seconds remaining, but Saint Joseph's hit three consecutive free throws to extend the margin. Clergeot hit a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left on the clock to give the final score.
UMass hit 23-of-50 field goals (46 percent) and hit 11-of-16 free throws, while St. Joe's connected on 19-of-56 attempts (33.9%) from the floor and converted 22-of-27 free throws. The Hawks capitalized on 18 UMass miscues which led to 19 points for the home team.
