Big First Half Gives George Washington 79-67 Win Over Men’s Basketball

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An 18-to-4 run in the first half propelled George Washington to a big first half lead and an eventual 79-67 win over the UMass men's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Smith Center. The Minutemen managed a second-half rally to pull within eight, but the Colonials held off UMass for the home Atlantic 10 win.
Carl Pierre led UMass (9-17, 2-11 A-10) with 14 points highlighted by four three pointers. Luwane Pipkins notched 13 points in his first game back after missing three due to injury. He moved into 13th all-time in program history with the effort giving him 1,397 career points to pass both Marcus Camby and Edwin Green.
George Washington (8-18, 4-9 A-10) was led by 20 points for Maceo Jack and 19 points from Armel Potter. DJ Williams and Justin Mazulla each scored double-figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Overall, UMass hit 23-of-57 field goals and was 8-of-24 from beyond the arc, while GW shot 27-of-49 from the floor and converted 20-of-28 free throw attempts. The Colonials also converted 13 UMass turnovers into 17 points – a 10-point advantage over the Minutemen.
George Washington used an 18-to-4 run in the first half to build out a double-figure lead at the intermission. After a Pierre three-pointer and a Diallo lay-up put UMass ahead 14-12, GW held the Minutemen to just two field goals over the next seven minutes while building out a 30-18 lead at the 6:58 mark.
The Colonials shot 66.7 percent in the opening stanza paced by 12 points from Jack and 10 points from Potter.
The Minutemen fought back in the second half cutting the lead to eight, 60-52, thanks to eight early points in the stanza from Jonathan Laurent.
Over the next five minutes, however, GW used a 14-to-3 run to regain control and a 74-55 lead at the 4:37 mark after a pair of Mazzulla free throws.
UMass closed the game with a 10-to-3 run giving the final 79-67 score.
