Resiliency Prevails As UMass Tops Fairfield On The Road, 62-60

November 09, 2019 | Men's Basketball

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Trailing by seven at the half on 36% shooting, the UMass offense came alive as the Minutemen shot 60.9% in the final 20 minutes and held Fairfield to just two baskets in the final five minutes to knock off the Stags on the road Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena, 62-60.

A game that saw neither team lead by more than 10 points came down to the final play as Fairfield's Landon Tallaferro, who led the team with 15 points, missed a three from the right side with less than five seconds left. Freshman Tre Mitchell hauled down the loose ball, drawing the foul and sending himself to the line with 1.9 seconds left.

Mitchell finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, along with a team-high seven rebounds, while Sean East II added 14 and a game-high seven dimes. Samba Diallo also scored in double-figures with 12 points and six boards, while T.J. Weeks hit three big treys off the bench in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Coming out of the first media timeout of the second half down by nine, the Minutemen went on a 13-2 over a four-minute span, kickstarted by back-to-back threes from Weeks. After John Buggs III drew a charge at the other end, layups from East II, Preston Santos and yet another three from Weeks gave UMass a one-point lead at 42-41.

Fairfield wouldn't go away, though, as the teams went punch-for-punch down the stretch. But a steal from Weeks at the defensive end, a dish from East II and a three from Pierre in the left corner put the Minutemen ahead for good.

For the game, Massachusetts shot 47.9% (23-of-48) while holding the Stags to 42% from the floor (21-of-50). Jesus Cruz (14 points) and Wassef Methnani (10 points) also scored in double figures for Fairfield. UMass also has 16 fast break points to the Stags' two in the game.

The Minutemen return home on Tuesday night to host defending CAA champion Northeastern at 7 p.m. from the Mullins Center. The game will be aired live on NESNplus and ESPN+.
