UMASS MEN'S BASKETBALL - SAINT LOUIS PREVIEW
• The Minutemen head out on the road for the first time in Atlantic 10 play heading West to face Saint Louis on Wednesday night. UMass is coming off a tough 69-60 loss to La Salle at home last Saturday in the league's opening weekend of action. Following the Wednesday tilt against the Billikens, the Maroon and White will stay on the road as the Minutemen head to Dayton on Sunday.
• Wednesday's game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network with Tom McCarthy (play-by-play) and Dan Dickau (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also watch digitally on CBSSports.com or with the CBS Sports app for mobile devices.Â
• On the radio airwaves, the game will be broadcast on the UMass Sports Network anchored by flagship station 105.5 FM WEEI and online via the TuneIn App. New Voice of the Minutemen Jay Burnham will be joined courtside by Adam Frenier.
• The Minutemen will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid against the Billikens. Overall, Saint Louis holds a 12-5 all-time record in the series against UMass. The last win for the Minutemen can on Jan. 31, 2015 in St. Louis.
• The game will also feature a pair of familiar faces for UMass fans. Saint Louis head coach Travis Ford coached at UMass from 2005-08 leading the Minutemen to a pair of 20-win seasons and an NIT runner-up finish in 2008. On Ford's staff is former UMass standout point guard Chris Lowe. From 2005-09, Lowe graduated as the school-record holder in career assists (678). That mark still stands as the sixth-best total in Atlantic 10 history. The Mount Vernon, New York, native played professionally for eight seasons in the NBA D-League and overseas in Lithuania, Slovakia, and Austria.Â
• UMass is led again this season by Luwane Pipkins who is the top returning scorer in the Atlantic 10 after notching 21.2 points per game last year. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team after a breakout sophomore campaign. He is one of just six players in program history to average over 21 points a game in a single-season joining the likes of Julius Erving and Marcus Camby. He also became the 51st player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points for his career.
• With 1,289 career points, Pipkins needs 43 more points to pass Anthony Gurley (18th, 2008-11, 1,331) on the all-time scoring list at UMass. If Pipkins maintains his current scoring average, he could finish among UMass' top-10 all-time scorers as a junior. He needs just under 100 more points to reach Erving (15th, 1,370 pts, 1969-71) and Camby (14th, 1,387 pts, 1993-96).Â
• Through 14 games played, UMass has the best scoring average (77.9 pts) in the Atlantic 10, ranks third in field goal percentage (46.7) and is first in three point field goal percentage (35.9). Defensively, UMass 13th in the league giving up 75.4 points per night.
• Individually, Holloway leads the A-10 for field goal percentage (74.7) while Pipkins ranks second in the league for points per game (19.6) and fourth in assists per game (5.7). Jonathan Laurent remains the top three-point shooter in the A-10, connecting on 50.0 percent of his attempts from range while Carl Pierre ranks 12th (38.4 percent).
• On the season, four Minutemen are averaging double figures led by Pipkins' 19.6 points per night. Laurent ranks second with an 11.8 point per game average, while Curtis Cobb is third (10.3 points). Pierre rounds out the top scorers with a 10.2 point average, while Holloway is just shy of the mark averaging 9.4 points per night.
• UMass added some more depth to its front court over the last month as Randall West suited up for the first time after the conclusion of the football season while Djery Baptiste made his first appearance for the Minutemen at Georgia on Sunday. West, a quarterback for the UMass football team, and the Vanderbilt transfer Baptiste will be available for the remainder of the season plus all of next year.
