September 16, 2018 | Football

Barr notches 15 tackles, Isabella records 20th career touchdown reception

MIAMI – University of Massachusetts football ended its streak of three consecutive road games with a 63-24 loss at FIU's Riccardo Silva Stadium on Saturday. The Minutemen fell to 1-3 with the loss while FIU improved to 2-1.

Andrew Ford started the game at quarterback and was 2-of-5 for six yards before exiting the game due to injury in the first quarter. Ross Comis rotated into the lineup and finished 5-of-12 for 60 yards before he also left due to injury in the second quarter. Comis added a 10-yard touchdown run.

Michael Curtis subbed into the contest at quarterback for the final drive of the second quarter and played the remainder of the game at the position. He was 8-for-15 with 158 passing yards, one touchdown pass and two interceptions, and rushed four times for 15 yards, including once for a touchdown.

Andy Isabella eclipsed 150 career receptions during the first quarter and ended the day with four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. He added three carries for 23 yards as well.

Bryton Barr led the defense with 15 tackles while he added a pass breakup. Martin Mangram collected a career-high nine stops while Cole McCubrey added a personal best of eight and Chinedu Ogbonna matched McCubrey's output. The group totaled a pair of turnovers as Jake Byczko forced a fumble Ogbonna scooped up and Lee Moses picked off a pass.

FIU struck twice via a Shawdarrius Phillips four-yard rushing touchdown and Napoleon Maxwell 3-yard run before Massachusetts responded late in the opening frame.

Comis engineered a 10-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in his 10-yard rushing touchdown. Comis found Dingle open over the middle for 22 yards before a 15-yard pass interference penalty on Isaiah Brown moved Massachusetts into the redzone. Comis went up the middle for six points two plays later.

The run game moved Massachusetts down the field for its second scoring drive as Fredericks and Young provided all 68 of the team's yards gained during the drive.

Fredericks burst free for 13 and 27 yards on consecutive carries before Young collected 22 and six on the following two plays as the Maroon and White went from its own 20 to the FIU 12. After the drive stalled, Garcia booted through his first field goal as a Minuteman and Massachusetts closed within 21-10 with 8:28 to play in the half.

The Panthers scored three times in the final five minutes of the half and entered the break ahead 42-10. Those conversions included a pair of James Morgan touchdown passes to Sterling Palmer (eight yards) and Maurice Alexander (38 yards) as well as a D'Vonte Price three-yard run.

Massachusetts added two more scoring drives during the third and fourth quarters as Curtis ran in from six yards away and Isabella tallied a 16-yard endzone catch, his 20th career touchdown reception.
