Tennis Battles For Narrow Win At Yale

Minutewomen secure 4-3 road victory over the Bulldogs
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts tennis won for the fifth time in its last seven matches when the Minutewomen downed Ivy League foe Yale, 4-3 in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday afternoon. The Maroon and White rallied from a deficit that nearly handed the doubles point to the Bulldogs and carried energy into singles action for wins by Ana Yrazusta (No. 2), Janja Kovacevic (No. 3) and Martina Bocchi (No. 6).
It marked the first ever win for Massachusetts tennis over an Ivy League foe.
After the Bulldogs won at No. 2 and Massachusetts responded with a 6-3 victory by Yrazusta and Laura Moreno at the No. 1, the double point came down to Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery against Lauren Gillinov and Sunday Swett at No. 3 spot.
Gillinov and Swett looked assured of the victory ahead 5-4 (40-0); however, Crawford and Avery saved four consecutive match points and rallied back for the 7-5 victory, and the doubles point.
Bocchi doubled the lead and made quick work of Caroline Amos via a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 6 singles, though Yale answered at No. 5 shortly thereafter with Elizabeth Zordani's 6-0, 6-3 win over Anna Napadiy.
Yrazusta extended the Massachusetts lead with her triumph at No. 2 singles, earned versus Amy Yang by a 6-2, 6-1 margin. The Bulldogs continued their comeback battle as Samantha Martinelli downed Crawford in the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-1.
With Kovacevic and Moreno still in action at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, Kovacevic sealed the team victory with her 6-4, 6-2 conquest over Valerie Shklover.
Massachusetts plays its second straight match in the State of Connecticut next with a Thurs., March 29 contest at Quinnipiac beginning at 3 p.m.
