Barr records 14 tackles; Isabella catches 10 passes in 36-15 loss
Ross Comis started at quarterback for the Minutemen and went 23-of-33 for 183 passing yards without a touchdown or interceptions thrown. Comis added 29 yards on the ground and a rushing score.
The Minutemen picked up both their touchdowns on the ground as Marquis Young also posted one touchdown and finished with 51 rushing yards total as well as three receptions covering 16 yards. Andy Isabella led the receiving group with 10 receptions for 85 yards.
Bryton Barr led the Minutemen and tied for the game high with 14 tackles, including 1.5 TFLs. Brice McAllister added nine stops, with an assisted TFL, and one pass breakup, while Jarell Addo also knocked down a BYU pass attempt and had seven tackles, including 1.0 TFLs. Jake Byczko add five stops, including an assisted TFL, and collected one BYU fumble.
Massachusetts recorded the game's opening 10 points on Cooper Garcia's field goal and Young's touchdown.
Garcia capped a methodical, 14-play drive into the North endzone with a 20-yard make, his seventh conversion of the season in eight tries.
Following Garcia's field goal, BYU took possession of the ball on the 35 yard line due to a kickoff out-of-bounds, but immediately fumbled on the Cougars' first play from scrimmage as Aleva Hifo put the ball on the turf and Byczko wisely fell on it.
Back on offense at the BYU 31 yard line, UMass again worked its way down the field slowly, and Young rumbled in from two yards away during the eighth play of the drive for the 10-0 lead with four minutes, 12 seconds to go in the quarter.
BYU pushed ahead with a pair of touchdown drives, one each in the first and second quarters.
The Cougars answered UMass' touchdown with one of their own at the 2:33 mark of the first when Zach Wilson hit Talon Shumway in the endzone from four yards away.
Wilson again connected with Shumway in the second quarter, this time from 15 yards out, as BYU jumped in front 14-10 with 1:50 left in the half.
Massachusetts had a chance to pull closer with time expiring, but Garcia's 36 yard field into a strong South endzone cross-wind stayed left of the uprights.
The Cougars moved the ball well into the fourth quarter and added to their lead with a Matt Hadley two-yard run and back-to-back Hifo scores spanning the third and fourth frames that stretched the advantage to 25 with 12:47 remaining.
Comis put points on the board for Massachusetts with the team's final drive of the game when he tucked it and ran in from five yards away for his sixth rushing touchdown of the day.
Massachusetts plays on the road next with a Sat., Nov. 17 contest at the University of Georgia. Kickoff on the SEC Network is set for 4 p.m.
