McCoy posts double-double to highlight seven double-figure scorers in exhibition victory

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball had seven double-figure scorers as the Minutewomen claimed a 109-51 exhibition victory over UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The contest marked the lone preseason tune-up for the squad, which opens the regular season on Tues., Nov. 6 with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Sacred Heart.

Freshman Asia McCoy had a double-double with a game-high 17 points in part on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting, while also recording 11 rebounds. Senior Jessica George (16), juniors Hailey Leidel and Vashnie Perry (15), sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey (14), senior Genesis Rivera (11) and freshman Destiny Philoxy (10) joined McCoy in the double-figure scoring category.

Rivera and Leidel was just short of their own double-doubles, finishing with nine and eight boards, respectively. As a team, UMass shot 47.9 percent (35-of-73) from the floor while holding the Corsairs to 31.5 percent (17-of-54) on the night.

The Maroon and White never trailed and set the tone early with an 18-2 run midway through the first quarter. Redshirt freshman Anil Soysal had six points in the opening half of her first game action after missing the 2017-18 campaign due to injury, while Rivera grabbed six of her nine rebounds before halftime. Defensively, the home side contained UMass Dartmouth and held the Corsairs to 4-of-22 (18.1 percent) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

As the second half wore on, the teams exchanged baskets but the 65-16 halftime lead for Massachusetts provided plenty of breathing room for the Minutewomen in the second half.

For UMass Dartmouth, Ashley Brown and Jess Korzec had a team-high 11 points apiece.

Massachusetts forced 27 turnovers by the Corsairs and turned that figure into 34 points.
