Thomas and Johnson Named UMass Student-Athletes of the Week

Women’s soccer and field hockey duo helped Minutewomen to wins last week
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Sports Luncheon Committee announced on Tuesday that freshman Sophie Johnson (field hockey) and redshirt junior Jenna Thomas (women's soccer) have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week presented by UMassFive College Credit Union.

Both Johnson and Thomas will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., Oct. 3 at noon in Berkshire Dining Commons. Guest speakers at the luncheon will be women's cross country head coach Julie LaFreniere, men's cross country head coach David Jackson and a member of the football coaching staff.

The event is open to the public for $11.25 per person with lunch included. Parking is available adjacent to Berkshire in Lot 33 as well as at metered spots in the Southwest Horseshoe and along Fearing Street.

Thomas scored a pair of goals as the Minutewomen won two games to move to a perfect 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play while extending their winning streak to eight straight. Thomas scored a headed goal in the 37th-minute of a 3-1 win over the defending league champs in La Salle to put UMass ahead 2-0 in the match. The junior followed with her third goal of the season and second of the game just moments into the second half, connecting on another header for the third and final goal of the afternoon.

Johnson scored her first collegiate goal in a 3-0 Atlantic 10 conference win over Davidson on Fri., Sept. 29. In one of the prettiest goals fans will see this season (click for video), Johnson drove along the baseline toward the left post before her initial shot was deflected into the air. As the ball began its descent to the pitch, Johnson batted it over the goalkeeper and into the cage.
