UMass Celebrates #NewMass With Commemorative Hockey Season Ticket Stock

October 11, 2018 | Athletics Department

Special commemorative ticket stock for the coming season pays tribute to those who create the atmosphere for the program, and who play a vital role in the further achievement of “NewMass”.

AMHERST, Mass. – While optimism for the 2018-19 Massachusetts hockey season surges in advance of the Minutemen's home opener on Friday night (Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.), the "NewMass" mentality grows strong within the team, its fans and the surrounding community. In 2017-18, the Minutemen posted the biggest one-year win differential (12) in the country. Along the way, now third year head coach Greg Carvel has brought sweeping culture change and an atmosphere of accountability and has established a code among the players and its coaches, broadly defined as "NewMass".

As with any team committed to the level of excellence and achievement which "NewMass" Hockey aims to uphold, a bevy of fans stand behind them to support the squad's play from the stands. Throughout the 2017-18 campaign, fans returned to the seats of the Mullins Center in droves and a reaffirmation of school pride embossed itself in the representation and candor displayed by the student fan base, culminating in the team's Hockey East Playoff series against UVM this past March.

As the Sales & Fan Experience staff contemplated on how to best enhance the level of engagement for the 2018-19 year, a clear emphasis on honoring those fans who stuck with the program through lean years and a recognition of the refueled student fervor become clear. As a result, Massachusetts Athletics created a special commemorative ticket stock for the coming season which pays tribute to those who create the atmosphere for the program and who play a vital role in the further achievement of "NewMass".

"As our hockey team continues to identify stronger with the NewMass concept, we wanted our fans to do the same," said Director of Marketing & Promotions Alyssa Leonard. "By providing a dictionary definition to the term, our fans can understand the messaging that is being conveyed to the team on a daily basis and the standards being set by our coaching staff. By pairing the definition with the venue photo from the playoff series last year, we remind our fans of the atmosphere they created. Our students and fans really showed up for the series, and we want that to be the expectation every night. This simplistic design gets those messages across and provides a constant reminder to our most loyal supporters."

"We decided to take a different direction this year for our ticket stock for hockey," said Director of Marketing & Digital Strategy Chris Tucci. "We wanted to find a way to convey the team's #NewMass identity in a way that was unique. During our brainstorming sessions, the concept of the #NewMass definition was a constant talking point along with the tremendous support from our fans and students during the Hockey East Playoffs last season. The simplicity of the design along with the powerful photo and definition helped make this idea a reality."

"Everyone within the UMass hockey program has been working diligently for the past two years to build a hockey team that everyone can be proud of," said Carvel. "NewMass is basically a description for the standard we have set for ourselves. A standard that has led this program back to respectability. A standard that we hope compels our students and local fans to come out support our team on the ice. These kids sacrifice a lot and are committed to being an excellent college hockey team. They have earned the right to be enthusiastically supported by our student body and Western Massachusetts hockey fans."
