Anastasio, Asefnia Earn Weekly UMass Honors

Duo named Student-Athletes of the Week.
AMHERST, Mass. - Following a successful weekend for the UMass women's and men's soccer teams, senior Salma Anastasio and redshirt senior Bardia Asefnia were named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week. The pair will be honored on Wednesday afternoon at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon.
Anastasio was a key figure in the Minutewomen's come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win against Maine in Saco on Sunday night. The senior had the game-winning goal in overtime and also had an assist on the game-tying goal late in regulation play helping the Minutewomen earn their first win of the season. Maine scored in the first minute of play at rain-soaked Thornton Academy and maintained the advantage for the bulk of the match. Anastasio set-up Erin Doster's game-tying goal for UMass in the 81st minute to force overtime. Just under two minutes into the extra time, she then had a wonderful individual effort to collect a loose ball in front of the goal before getting a strike on it for the Golden Goal.
Asefnia made a career-high seven saves as the UMass men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the year with Friday's 1-1 double-overtime draw against Columbia – the defending Ivy League Co-Champion from last season. The fifth-year senior made five of his saves in the first half of play to help UMass take an early 1-0 lead over the Lions. He was huge in overtime making two more saves to keep Columbia from finding the go-ahead goal. UMass' 2-0-1 start to the year is its best since 2012 when the Minutemen started the year with the same record.
The UMass Sports Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, September 6 at Berkshire Dining Common from noon to 1 p.m. The featured speakers for the day will be UMass football head coach Mark Whipple and Minuteman Marching Band Director Tim Anderson.
