Men's Basketball Falters At George Mason, 86-81

January 04, 2017 | Men's Basketball

Holloway’s first career double-double of 17 points, 10 rebounds not enough

FAIRFAX, Va. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball sophomore center Rashaan Holloway recorded his first collegiate double-double and the Minutemen shot nearly 47 percent from the floor, but it was not enough to carry the team to a victory as George Mason took an 86-61 game from UMass at EagleBank Arena on Wednesday.

Holloway led four Minutemen in double-figures with 17 points to go with his 10 rebounds. Luwane Pipkins scored 16 with five rebounds and three assists. Donte Clark chipped in 15 points with seven rebounds. Zach Lewis added 12 on 6-of-11 shooting.

Marquise Moore scored 24 with nine rebounds for George Mason (11-4 overall, 1-1 Atlantic 10). Jalen Jenkins and Otis Livingston II provided 18 apiece. Jaire Grayer earned 16 points.

Massachusetts (10-5, 0-2 Atlantic 10) led by as many as 13 points early; however, George Mason found an offensive groove over the final seven minutes of the first half. The Patriots erased their deficit and pushed ahead for the first time on a layup by Moore that made it 36-35 George Mason with two minutes, 21 seconds to play in the first.

The Patriots took a two point lead into halftime and pushed ahead by as many as eight points in the second stanza. With George Mason ahead, 69-61 at the 5:54 mark, the Minutemen pushed back and eventually went ahead by one through a nine-point scoring run.

Holloway hit a jumper, C.J. Anderson scored all five of his points in the game on a corner 3-pointer and fastbreak layup while Pipkins hit an up-and-under layup for the nine-point run that made it 70-69 UMass with 3:57 left.

George Mason collected itself with a timeout following Pipkins' score and had 10 of the next 12 points to go ahead for good. UMass cut it to a one-possession game in the final minute after Jarreau put in four straight via a pair of free throws and fastbreak layup, but the Patriots hit their free throws to keep hold of the lead to the final buzzer.
